Emily Paige Jarrell is in her ninth year of teaching at PS 126, a culturally diverse Title 1 school near Chinatown in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Emily, currently a 5th Grade teacher, has taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades in both General Education and Special Education Inclusion classrooms.
Emily attended New York University for her undergraduate studies in Elementary Education and Fordham University for her graduate studies in Curriculum Development and Teaching. Emily has developed and led workshops and seminars for teachers in District 2 in New York City (as well as for teachers in Harrisburg, PA and San Diego, CA) on the teaching of reading and writing using the workshop model.
Emily co-authored a course for new teachers in District 2, NYC, called Foundations of Literacy - an in-service course on the foundations of literacy development in children and the whole language approach to teaching reading and writing, using the workshop model. Emily is fighting to implement, understand, and spread the Genre Practice approach further because of its extraordinary potential to reform public schooling as we know it.
